During all contained fires, venting the structure is as important as water itself.
Ventilation releases smoke and super heated toxic gases from the building. This action helps extinguish the fire, increases the survival rate of any victims trapped inside and diminishes the potential for back draft disasters. A back draft can occur when doors are opened. The unrestrained oxygen rushes in causing an explosion. Every fireman is trained to perform this dangerous, but necessary procedure.
